In March 2020, when quarantine started, I stayed home with my two kids, ages 3 years + 4 months. It was hard, exhausting, and scary. I turned my camera on my children as we found creative ways to stay sane and have fun. We found nature in the city within forest preserves and tiny beaches. We ran outside when it rained and jumped in puddles. My 3-year-old covered himself in paint and made giant paintings that ended in colorful popsicle baths. We roasted S’mores over the stove and my husband “camped” with my son in the basement. We projected aquariums on every wall, and learned about sharks and sea animals. We drove to South Carolina for a month to stay with my parents and get some help with the boys and be by the ocean. I showed my son the sunrise for the first time. Instead of my youngest going back to daycare in March, I got so much extra time with him at home to watch him grow and bond with his brother. Eventually we decided to sell our house in Chicago and move to Colorado. On December 1, 2020 we packed our car and drove west. we stayed in airbnb’s until we found a permanent home in march. I look back at this time with so many mixed emotions, but am ultimately grateful for our health, jobs and family.
